As a current undergraduate student, I can say that student teacher relationships are very important. I truly believe that it is the beginning of cultivating a successful academic year for the student. Having a good relationship with an instructor, helps students stay intrigued about the material they are learning. This is very relevant to my situation. Since starting Arizona State University Online program, I was a little apprehensive about the dynamic I would have with my professors. I was worried they would not be there for me in a way a physical professor could be, or they would not notice my engagement in discussions or questions. So far, I’ve been in it 5 weeks, and I am impressed with the relationships with my professors. They provide constructive feedback to help me improve my work, and they are available almost always. I can reach out to them by email, phone or even online office hours, a more professional Skype or face time. This helps me keep the momentum going until the end of the quarter. What I especially noticed helped student teacher relationships was having a diverse student population. When I attended classes on campus, it when we had a diverse mix of students. The professor was unbiased and did not show special treatment to students that looked like them. This kept the student teacher relationships open and fair. Teachers with different student populations build stronger relationships with students. My hope as a teacher is to provide a space for students to grow and learn. I want our relationships to be solid and I chose to respect them and their diversities. A great student teacher relationship also points out the uniqueness and individualities of each of their students. My job at Starbucks, allows me to do that right now. I asses my team’s individual strengths and the reasons why we make such a great team. Moving forward, I hope my student teacher dynamics are as strong as what I have had in my educational career.
